The first 10 inductees to the Minnesota Writer's Hall of Fame were chosen for their quality and breadth, and a strong connection to life and letters in the state. A panel of librarians, historians and writers were consulted in the creation of the first list of honorees; members of the public will provide nominations for new writers to be inducted yearly.
With such a wealth of writers as exists in Minnesota history, choosing the first 10 inductees was a difficult process. The decision was made to honor these inductees because they provide a great range and variety of writing, from all different genres. An initial list of potential honorees was circulated among Minnesota Book Awards committee members, staff of The Friends and the Minnesota Historical Society, librarians, writers and others with an interest or career-related experience with Minnesota literature. The Minnesota Writer's Hall of Fame strives to represent all Minnesotans in the writers we celebrate, and the primary list includes novelists, poets, artists and naturalists — with a vast bibliography aimed for youth and adults alike.
